CDL hosts and provides a shared digital asset management system (DAMS), which at this time is available only to the UC Libraries for creating and managing object-level metadata and content files.

If you are at one of the UC Libraries, you can use the DAMS to import and create metadata and files (like images, texts, audio, and video) and build out simple and complex objects.

The UC DAMS is one part of a broader set of services for managing, sharing, and preserving digital collections. This set of services is deliberately modular, to allow for maximum flexibility. Generally speaking, we are using the DAMS as a closed, administrative system that "specializes" in metadata and digital asset management. CDL then provides workflows to other services for access (primarily through Calisphere) and preservation (through Merritt).

We think this diagram does the best job of showing where the DAMS fits in:

The Software: Nuxeo

Our shared DAMS for the UC Libraries is a customized implementation of Nuxeo. Nuxeo is used by a variety of organizations–from media companies to the U.S. Navy–for their content management needs. For more information about Nuxeo and how the UC Libraries selected and installed it, please see the FAQ.

What should go in Nuxeo, and what does it offer?

At this time, Nuxeo is open only to digital content owned and/or stewarded by the UC Libraries. Otherwise, there are no criteria for inclusion; Nuxeo is available for any unit within the Libraries to manage any content it deems necessary.

From a technical perspective, Nuxeo may be better suited to some digital resources (for example, certain file types and formats) than others. See Supported File Formats for the current version of Nuxeo supported by the CDL. In considering what to manage in the Shared DAMS, a further consideration may be the immediate publication endpoints for Nuxeo (Calisphere, the Solr common index underlying Calisphere, and DPLA).

Nuxeo is not intended for managing content including clinical or personally identifiable information (PII) whose disclosure would constitute a violation of HIPAA/HITECH, FERPA, or other similar statutes, regulations, or laws. Content containing PII should be redacted or anonymized prior to ingesting or uploading into Nuxeo.

We don't maintain an official list of features for Nuxeo, because a) there are different use cases which reflect different functionality and b) the product is always changing, as we build new tools and leverage its upgrades. That said, we realize that campuses often want to compare functional requirements. Here is an annotated list of original requirements created by the systemwide precursor to this service. However, this list does not represent the full range of capabilities of the platform.

We encourage you to contact us about collections you are considering describing, storing, and/or managing using Nuxeo.
